Research & Innovation
The future belongs to those who lean into it
At Gassco R&I we move ideas forward. Every project we take on is about making operations safer, smarter, and more efficient, while reducing emissions and preparing our infrastructure for the energy systems of tomorrow.
Energy for future generations
Gassco’s vision is to secure energy for future generations. To help deliver on this vision, and our strategy, we are tasked with exploring what does not yet exist, test new ideas, learn and fail, to give the organisation a head start on tomorrow’s solutions. We do this in close partnership with the players on the Norwegian continental shelf, research institutions and universities, and other organisations. Do you want to collaborate with Gassco?

Our work is organised into three strategic programs and one Innovation Hub, designed to implement innovation and new competencies in the organisation.
Our programs
Safe & reliable
We develop and apply solutions that strengthen safety, integrity and operational reliability across our portfollio. This includes smarter inspection methods, better monitoring, and technologies that reduce the need for manual work in high‑risk environments. These measures help us manage ageing infrastructure, adapt to climate impacts, and stay resilient against physical and digital threats.
By improving how we understand, maintain, and protect our infrastructure, this program supports Gassco’s most important responsibility: delivering energy safely, reliably and efficiently, even as the world changes around us.
Competitive systems & low emissions
This program focuses on making the gas transport system more competitive, robust and climate‑friendly. We test and develop solutions that reduce energy consumption, cut emissions and improve operations and maintenance. Our work strengthens capacity, regularity and cost efficiency in a sector facing higher expectations, stricter regulations and rapidly changing markets.
New opportunities
We explore how new technologies, digitalisation and AI can create value for Gassco. This includes finding and testing tools that improve analysis, decision‑support, workflows and operational resilience.
We also build knowledge about future low‑carbon solutions — such as CCS, hydrogen and other emerging technologies — when they are relevant for the long‑term development of the infrastructure we operate. By qualifying new technologies and studying possible alternative uses, we prepare Gassco for the energy transition and strengthens our role as an infrastructure architect.
Innovation hub

Our role goes beyond operations
With a new national mandate, we have studied the possibility of future hydrogen infrastructure for large-scale exports to Europe, and we are contributing to the development of a European CO2 value chain.
